When I was in residency, I would drive home after being awake for 36 hours working in the hospital. I dreaded these marathon shifts and, once done, it was hard for me to stay awake during the drive home. I decided to ride my bike to and from the hospital on my call days to make sure I would stay awake. The bonus was that riding gave me a reason to look forward to these shifts. Twenty years later I still ride as much as I can and I prescribe biking for nearly all of my patients.
